hard to say but i have noticed that not all discus get along and its hard finding a balance in a large school. if they both pair up and start defending then its a good sign, best of luck that things work out

No change really, they're still all doing OK Click here to enlarge

The pigeon blood still seems to protect his little area of the tank, chases the others off, but they're all still getting food, no bullying or exclusions.

The pigeon blood (right hand side) in the top photo, seems to - for lack of a better word - claimed part of the tank. He or she..is deliberately chasing the others out of that area if they swim too close. It allows the other pigeon blood (left hand side) in the top photo, to come into that area, and they "sort of" swim with each other. Is this a pair bonding? I wouldn't have thought they would do it this soon..
Sounds like they might be pairing up. My Pengang Eruptions did that for a while until they started laying eggs on the sponge filter. My checkerboard pigeons were a little more docile when pairing up, and took a while for them to find a good spawning location. They tried a couple different places on the driftwood then finally found the other sponge filter (I have two in the tank).

When the swim together do they "fan" their fins and kind of swim upwards? Looks almost like a dance. It was really cool to watch mine doing it.

I'm not really expecting any survivors though, I think my water is too hard.

Also wasn't really expecting eggs considering they are quite young, so I guess they just found the best place they could come up with to put them.

Nah, no luck. Could be a case of "new parents" but it could also be a case of the water being too hard for the eggs to be fertilized.
I saw a few of the eggs go white, and about 5 hours ago the "parents" ate the eggs.

Going to buy a discus egg..clay pot thing (Not sure of the translation). Still, that wont fix the hardness of the water though, so I'm also considering a RO/DI unit.
But, after doing lots of reading and checking out other posts, I doubt that even if I were to provide softer water and a proper place for them to lay their eggs, I doubt any of the fry would survive with other discus around.

Which brings me to needing a separate breeding tank for them...and all of the issues / concerns and stuff that go with that.

Phew, not sure what I'm going to do, but it was sure interesting to watch them laying their eggs Click here to enlarge
