You have changed my view on themed tanks, I usually hate them, but this, this is the exception to the rule.

Re: DIY 3D Mayan Background w/ Pyramid 75 Gallon

Thank you everyone for all your kind comments lol. had a dilemma. So im about ready to throw in the eco-complete cichlid sand and was wondering how long does this take to cycle. It has some live bacteria in it to help the tank cycle. The sales rep told me about 4 to 5 days but this seems rather quick before i could put fish in it. I still havent gotten a heater yet. Some people have told me i should turn the heat up to about high 80s. But since i havent bought one yet i have to do without. Do i really need it for the cycling process? So im using the fishless cycle method so not to stress out any fish but in this process i think im the one stressed out lol

By fishless what are you using? It depends if you're just adding ammonia could take weeks, but if you add beneficial bacteria it could take a week or less. Also about the heater I haven't noticed tanks cycling any faster being colder or warmer.

Re: DIY 3D Mayan Background w/ Pyramid 75 Gallon

So heres another update on the tank. I threw in the eco-complete sand and now waiting for the tank to cycle. Im not really happy with the color of the sand though but must wait for the dust to clear to get a better picture. I bought the cichlid sand thinking it was a black/white mix of sand but this looks more black/yellowish mix. From my understanding the ecocomplete cichlid sand only comes in black/white or am i wrong on this and bought the wrong color? My wife is saying to just add more black sand to the mix but if this is truly a black/yellowish sand im thinking of removing it. Your thoughts please. I also bought two fluval m300 heaters and fyi for those who own this or are thinking of getting it... It says on the heater a minimum and maximum water line making you think this heater is not completely submersible in water but i called fluval and was told that you can fully submerge!

yup I use nothing but M series heaters they are great, nice to know you can full submerge them means I can get them off the back corner of my tank and hide them down at the bottom behind some driftwood or plants. cool to know thanks!

Ok so the water has cleared and i believe the sand has lightened up a bit to the white but my wife days im color blind and that its still yellow. Not sure if its the surrounding background color that makes it look more yellow. Im about to stir the sand again to move the dust im sure has settled. Here are some pics. Does this look white or yellow to you?Click here to enlargeClick here to enlarge

Ok, I showed the picture to the man with no background information whatsoever and asked him what color that sand was. He said black and white, but it looks like it's got a slight tint to it, maybe from the lighting.

I think this picture it looks way more white than the first one.

It looks black and purple to me :S. lol just kidding Click here to enlarge but in all seriousness lighting can effect the look of it. What are you using as lights? In my tanks I use mostly play sand. In my axolotl tanks the light is more yellow making the sand look browner but in my cichlid tank it looks almost white.

Well right now it has those cheap lights they give you at petco when you buy aquariums. The plan is to use submersible hydor h2show spotlights all over the tank for now as lighting but later on save up for a quality led above tank light.

i would rinse the sand repetadly until clear then put in tank and use a plate or bucket to fill the water that way it dosnt get haze.

Because its cichlid sand with live bacteria i couldn't prewash it beforehand. Its still has dust but ive managed to get a lot of it out by stirring the sand bed every couple of hours and letting my aquaclear 110 filter do the job. Loving this filter by the way. Looking to get a second one soon.
