mate that themed tank looks absolutly insane. i think a dark substrate would look good becouse the backgrounds already white and it will make your fish look bleak. the dark will give contrast and also make some good substrate for plants if your going that way.

That's awesome! Like aussie said, I'd check out some black sand for contrast.

Looks very cool though, and your craftsmanship is great.

Black Substrate would be a very nice contrast. I am currious about the build and the process of making it. If you have pics please post. If no pictures would you do a write up on the process and materials used to do the background.

First cut a strofoam sheet the size of my aquarium then cut peices of brick and siliconed it to that background. Get the stone calendar on ebay!

First i found the calendar stone on ebay, bought some styrofoam at home depot along with drylock basement waterproof paint and quikkrete cement coloring mix. Used a hot knife to make it easier to cut foam.
First cut a rectangular foam the size of the width of your aquarium. Then place the stone dead center of it and silicone it to that background. Then start cufting bricks of different sizes and silicone it all around the background around the calendar stone. Then just paint it. The pyramid was simple as well. Just cut the bottom square to match the circumference of the calendar stone and built my way up. Do the stairs at the end. Afterwards i hollowed it out like so...

No cement too messy. Used drylock basement water proof paint and mixed it with quickkrete cement coloring. Looks and feels like cement and easier to do.

Actually i found out someone on crsigslist did something similar for a vivarium. Since then someone else has recently posted on youtube a similar themed aquarium but not quite as nice as mine. Click here to enlarge looked decent though. Just youtube 3d mayan theme terrarium or aquarium and you should find something.

Re: DIY 3D Mayan Background w/ Pyramid 75 Gallon

Need advice... Someone on craigslist just listed a dual head wavemaker rated at 3170 gph for a decent price but is this too much power to circulate a 75 gallon tank that will host mabuna cichlids soon? Its the aquatop cp24 model. Has anyone ever used it?

Click here to enlarge My wife and I are kicking around the idea of building a pond. We saw a skull decoration at the WalMart (i know....) pet section, and we both got the ideo of getting one of those scientific articulated skeletons and removing the metal and throwing it in the pond like we buried a dead body in there!!

Heres an update on my 3d background. So far i got a blue led.light in the pyramid and today i installed a red led bubbler to light up the calendar! I also installed two dual head 1600gph wavermakers on each side of the tank. This week ill.be throwing in cichlid sand which i already bought and start filling it up with water! Heres the pics of the updates:
